“This is a significant step forward that will enable more effective management of water resources in the region and has now been approved by the Court of Auditors,” the Ministry of Environment and Energy revealed in a statement.
This 1.8 million euro investment, 100% financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) and included in the Algarve Water Efficiency Plan, “will contribute to greater efficiency and sustainability of groundwater,” the note reads.
The project to install the piezometers, which will take six months to complete, will be carried out by APA.
Quoted in a statement, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, highlighted that water scarcity, “an increasingly present reality” in the Algarve region, “imposes the need for more efficient management of water resources, supported by knowledge of groundwater availability”.
“With this new capacity, which will allow the Algarve to have a total of 82 piezometers, we can make more informed and strategic decisions to face the region’s water challenges”, she added.
Good news that Portugal are at last going to try and monitor as well as hopefully manage its under ground water supplies, there are many borehole wells and more are going up every week where we live. Hopefully the new body will ensure that all the wells are legal.
