So-called “illegal races” had been going on for about a year and a half, according to the GNR statement.
The police operation of criminal investigation and road inspection culminated in the inspection of more than 200 vehicles.
The GNR reports that, during the proceedings, two people were arrested for the crimes of driving without a legal license and for the crime of falsifying technical records, 14 men were charged with dangerous driving, and 37 reports of administrative offenses were drawn up.
In total, 23 vehicles were seized due to changes in their characteristics, which are subject to extraordinary inspection, and 14 administrative offences were registered relating to the lack of civil liability insurance, lack of mandatory periodic inspection, tyres, among others.
This operation was carried out by the Porto Territorial Command, through the Traffic Accident Crime Investigation Unit (NICAV), of the Porto Traffic Detachment, in the early hours of Friday to Saturday.
The defendants are all between 21 and 34 years old.
The operation took place in Leça da Palmeira, in the municipality of Matosinhos, “a place where the practice of this type of behaviour has been observed and monitored, as it jeopardises road safety, involving the perpetrators of these practices and also the people who witness them”, reads the statement.
In the note, the GNR takes the opportunity to point out that it “is aware of the growing phenomenon commonly known as ‘Street Racing’, due to the social alarm and the serious consequences of these dangerous events, as well as the fact that they constitute increasingly organised criminal acts, whether of a criminal or administrative nature”.
This is all well and good, and good on the authorities for doing their bit in response to the squiggle of tyre marks imprinted along parts of the sea front road in Leça and for taking the people who shouldn't be on the road off it. Imho, something also needs to be done about the huge lack of education, respect and overall road sense shown by a lot of motorists. As a professional driver, I see (and do my best to avoid) countless road traffic accidents on a daily basis caused by excessive speed, aggressive and dangerous manoeuvres (especially those last moment turn offs..) and selfish behaviour of other road users, especially during the rush hours. Of course, not every driver behaves this way, but, and unfortunately, this from seven years observation, it's the case for the majority who might be on some sort of a power trip and don't seem to care about the idea that they sit at the controls of potentially dangerous 2 ton machines. Also, in pedestrian and residential areas, motorists tend to forget that they share the space (roads and sidewalks) with men, women, children, vulnerable adults and the elderly when they speed at between 50 and 100 km in residential areas where there are many more pedestrians due to a café, pharmacy, children's playground. These are some of the issues that really concern me as a resident in Portugal. This situation has been getting worse and seemingly very little being done in terms of improvements and to change for the better.

Its a good initiative by GNR we should always inform the police about such incident that occurs in our area.

For the last few weeks I, and many others living close to Av. Eng. Jaoa Meireles in Vilamoura have been disturbed by excessive noise from sports car racing up and down. This mostly happens between 1.00am and 3.00am IN THE MORNING. We suspect alcohol plays it's part but the overworked GNR seem unable to stop this most irresponsible behaviour. I have lived here for 7 years and this the first year it has occurred.
We hope that something can be done to at least placate visitors to this area who bring much needed income.
