In the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, the Terra Agora Foundation has initiated a novel ecological restoration project that involves the regeneration of a 1,600-hectare land area. The foundation is seeking new land and guardian projects, which are overseen by an organisation that seeks to restore them on a social and environmental level while also involving the local population.
As Ivan Sellers, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Terra Agora Foundation explained, “Our main mission after acquiring the land is to find people and communities dedicated to preserving and regenerating it for generations to come. The Foundation acts as a foundation, ensuring that they have all the support they need to create and implement projects with great ecological and socioeconomic impact”.
With the support of the European Union (EU), the foundation in Portugal is dedicated to restoring and improving the nation's natural landscapes. Work on the foundation's initial initiatives, including the Idanha-à-Vida project, which is overseen by PlantarFuturo, has already begun. The long-term goal of this initiative, also created by the business PlantarFuturo, is to combine resources and group knowledge to support ecological, social, and economic well-being as well as regeneration in that particular bioregion.
As Flávio Sambento, manager of the Idanha-à-Vida project emphasised, “The Idanha-à-Vida project currently has a team of nine professionals dedicated to various regenerative activities. In the area of ecological restoration, we have dedicated ourselves to reforesting the territory and producing organic olive oil with the integration of grazing animals. In the socioeconomic aspect, through artistic activities, meetings and workshops, we strive to rescue traditions and strengthen human ties”.
