Until the 4th of March, the weather in mainland Portugal will be conditioned by a depression region, with expression in altitude over the Iberian Peninsula, and by the transport of a cold air mass at low levels, affecting the North and Center regions until the 3rd of March.

The occurrence of showers is to be expected, being more intense in the South region, and less frequent in the North region, and may occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms. Precipitation will be more likely until the 3rd of March, although it may also occur in a dispersed way on Carnival day (4th of March), especially during the afternoon.

Snowfall is expected in the highlands of the North and Center and the occurrence of snow is less likely at the end of the day on the 3rd of March.

The wind will be generally weak to moderate from the east quadrant, blowing strong temporarily in the highlands.

The temperature will rise in the North and Center on the 3rd and 4th of March. Thus, minimums are expected to vary between 5 and 10°C on the coast and between -1 and 8°C in the interior, and the maximum temperature should vary between 15 and 20°C on the coast and between 10 and 15°C in the interior.

A warning was issued for snowfall in Serra da Estrela, in the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco, in force until midnight (4th March).

Madeira weather warning

Until 4th March, the weather in the archipelago of Madeira will be conditioned by a northeasterly flow, the result of the joint action of an anticyclone, located in the Azores region, and a depression region with expression in altitude, located between Madeira and the Iberian Peninsula.

Thus, showers are expected, being more frequent on the northern slope and in the highlands of the island of Madeira, and which may be snow at the highest points of the island of Madeira.

The wind will be light to moderate predominating from the northeast, blowing at times strong in the eastern and western extremes of the island of Madeira, on the island of Porto Santo and in the highlands, especially until the afternoon of the 3rd of March.

Northerly waves of 2 to 3 meters are expected on the north coast of the island of Madeira and in Porto Santo, being less than 1 meter on the south coast.

The temperature should not change significantly during this period, with minimum temperature values between 9 and 15°C, should approach 0°C at the highest points, and the maximum temperature should vary between 15 and 20°C, not exceeding 10°C in the highlands.

Azores weather warning

On the 3rd and 4th of March, the weather will be influenced by a region of high pressures and generally light showers, which may occur on the islands of the Central and Eastern Group.

The wind will blow from the good to moderate south quadrant (10/30 km/h) in the islands of the Western Group. In the Central Group, the wind will be from the north/northeast good to moderate (10/30 km/h), and on the islands of the Eastern Group, the wind will blow from the moderate to fresh north/northeast (20/40 km/h) with gusts up to 50 km/h.

As for the state of the sea, waves from the northern quadrant of 1 to 3 meters are expected throughout the Archipelago.

Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 11ºC and 13ºC and maximum temperatures are expected to range between 16ºC and 18ºC.
