“We can never lose focus on accountability. We can never lose focus on responsibility. We can never lose focus on avoiding any feeling that the problems have been solved”, said Luís Montenegro at the signing session of the contract for the design, construction and operation of the future plant that will produce fresh water from salt water.
At the session, held in Albufeira, where the desalination plant will be installed, the head of the Government described the construction of the infrastructure as “a historic moment for the country and the region”.
The project to build a desalination plant in Albufeira, in the district of Faro, is one of the measures in response to the drought affecting the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, as part of a package of measures launched by the previous Government and continued by the current government.
The contract award, which represents an investment of around 108 million euros, is part of the Algarve Regional Water Efficiency Plan, which is part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

To get an idea of the magnitude, how does the yearly capacity of the plant compare to yearly usage of the Faro district?

In a reply to SC the amount of drinking water produced will only have a small amount of impact compared to current supply -let alone future supply. Apart from climate change dropping less water on the Algarve, there is too much of the wrong fruit, too much construction (especially for high end and large tourist developments), not enough effort to reduce water leakage through water companies pipes, not enough collection of rain water.
