Following recent news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly bought a property in the Comporta area worth over £3 million, the New York Post has stated that the duo still faces the hurdle of obtaining Portuguese citizenship.

The newspaper reports that the Sussexes would need to file a Portuguese citizenship application which requires a language test, with candidates needing to be able to use and understand everyday language, expressions and basic phrases.

The Express.co.uk reports that Meghan Markle already speaks additional languages, including Spanish, as noted on her tour of Colombia with Prince Harry in August. However, the same cannot be said for Harry, who has admitted to not knowing a second language.

When it comes to applying for Portuguese citizenship, there are multiple options which include: five years of uninterrupted residency, having ancestors from the country, being married for three years to a Portuguese citizen or investing over £400,000 through investment funds, scientific research, local companies and/or businesses, with the Sussexes seeking the latter option.

Upon obtaining the sought-after visa, the pair would be able to travel freely through the Schengen area which covers 29 countries.

When it was reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had bought a house in Portugal, in the same luxury development where Princess Eugenie has a home, several British media outlets reported that the main reason was to obtain a Golden Visa so that Meghan could travel freely within the Schengen area.

However, Angela Levin, an expert on the British royal family, has another theory, which she revealed to 'The Express': the couple's aim is to strengthen their image in Europe as members of the British royal family.
