Leitão became, alongside Rui Oliveira, the first Portuguese to become an Olympic champion outside of athletics, with the pair winning the Madison, after the cyclist from Viana do Castelo had won silver in omnium.

The 26-year-old Portuguese cyclist was absent from the ANOC Awards, with the president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation (FPC), Delmino Pereira, receiving the award from Iúri Leitão at the Estoril Congress Center.
