The Azorean island of São Miguel is reclaiming its whaling cultural legacy by constructing a museum in the Ponta Delgada harbour and providing two boats for recreational and sporting purposes. The activities will be run by the Ponta Delgada Naval Club, and a local whale-watching company in a cooperative effort to revive a tradition that is “practically lost”.

Carlos Carreiro, the president of the Ponta Delgada Naval Club, stated that the association's goal of making two whaling boats available for members and the public to enjoy is made possible through the partnership established with ‘Futurismo Azores Adventures’.

“Our objective, is for visitors to experience this collective and very Azorean memory, which was whaling, and which, nowadays, we can use in another way, which is through leisure, without ever forgetting the memory of our ancestors”, stated Carlos Carreiro.

Promoting São Miguel's whaling heritage will also be aided by the upcoming museum area, which will be furnished with audiovisual materials and tools pertaining to whale fishing.

The opening of Casa dos Botes is set for 2025, which will operate in a space supplied by the naval association, will also provide the club with new energy and make it possible to resurrect the whaling tradition in São Miguel.
