Casa Donavan is distinguished by its unique approach to timber construction, a process the architect himself describes as “almost artisanal”. Working closely with the master carpenter was essential to ensure precision and quality of execution. Furthermore, the choice of heat-treated wood, without the use of chemicals, reinforces the commitment to sustainability.

In addition to the materials chosen, the design of the house was thought to reduce the need for air conditioning systems. The intelligent use of solar exposure and natural cross ventilation contribute to a lower environmental impact. There was also a conscious effort to select local suppliers, minimizing travel and imports to reduce the ecological footprint.

For Gonçalo Pimah, this recognition reinforces the position of Portuguese architecture on the international scene: "Portuguese architecture is an area recognized among its peers in the world like few other areas. As in Portuguese cinema, it is regularly mentioned and even awarded. In fact, Portugal is the only country in the world with two living Pritzker Prize winners, which reflects the quality and influence of our work."

Casa Donavan is now in the final stages of voting for the "Building of the Year 2025" award. The public can support this Portuguese project by voting through the following link: https://boty.archdaily.com/us/2025/candidates/177082/donavan-house-slash-pimaa
