Beginning in 1979, an incredibly successful vaccination programme has fought this disease and until recently it was only endemic in two countries in the world – Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the polio virus has been detected in Gaza and a concerted effort is under way to ensure that vaccination programmes are maintained despite the extremely challenging conditions there. In September, 550.000 vaccines were administered and another half a million vaccines are now being given.
The weather was mixed but a group of intrepid cyclists, organized by Paul Beesley from Activity Bike Rides, set off on a 40 kilometre bike ride from outside Estoi Pousada. They returned to a local Estoi café for a well-deserved drink. Donations from those taking part totalled a fantastic 320 euros.
In October, RCEPI arranged a “virtual race” which took place during their Tuesday lunch time meeting at Estoi Pousada. Sponsorship for the racers and other donations from members raised a further 480 euros.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joined the polio fight in 2013 and match, two-to-one, every dollar the Rotary Foundation commits to reduce the funding shortfall for polio eradication. The 800 euros raised will become 2400 euros to buy much needed vaccines.
Rotarians worldwide have helped immunize more than 3.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. Vaccination is essential to stop the disease returning to the countries where it has already been eradicated.
