Anyone in the Algarve who wants to shop at the store will need to cross the border into Spain for the closest supermarket.
The nearest store is in Ayamonte, in the province of Huelva. However, while this supermarket is relatively close to residents of Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim, those who live in Sagres, for example, will have to travel more than 150 kilometres to get there.
The Mercadona store located furthest south in Portugal is in Setúbal. The Alentejo is also served by a store of the Spanish chain, which is located in the Évora district. The remaining 58 stores are distributed between Almada and Viana do Castelo, according to a report by Postal.
Love Mercadona and would really like to see one in the Algarve, maybe in Tavira or Faro. We're moving to Olhao later this year and would love to see it happen.

I don’t get it. I have been to Mercadona and do not see anything special. Their coffee selections lack any of the higher quality Arabica varieties. The wine selections are the same as other store chains in Portugal. No differences in other items, nor are prices much different.
