According to a press release from ULSALG, the welcoming ceremony for the clinicians took place last Friday, in the municipality of Castro Marim, in the district of Faro, and the 202 doctors will carry out their internship in health units in the Algarve, with internships in General and Family Medicine and Hospital Pharmacy as well as in specialist areas.

At the time, the president of the ULSALG board of directors, Tiago Botelho stated that he considered that “intern [doctors] are the lifeblood of the National Health Service”, professionals who ensure “the generational replacement of teams”.

The person in charge has made himself available “to monitor the continuous improvement” of the new doctors, highlighting that in “the Algarve we do the best we can in the country and in the world”.

The doctors were assigned to the specialties of General and Family Medicine (26), Anesthesiology (two), General Surgery (two), Gastroenterology (two), Gynecology/Obstetrics (three), Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (five), Intensive Medicine (two, Internal Medicine (seven), Oncology (two), Pediatrics (two), Pulmonology (two), Psychiatry (three) and Radiology (two).

The specialties of Public Health, Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Otorhinolaryngology, Clinical Pathology, Rheumatology and Urology received a doctor.

As for General Training, “to deepen their knowledge in different clinical contexts”, 132 interns will develop their training, in a supervised manner, in different specialties and services, the note reads.

The Hospital Pharmacy area received eight new pharmaceutical residents who will complete the training program in health units in the Algarve.

According to the Algarve Local Health Unit, the “number of intern doctors in the Algarve has been gradually increasing since 2023”.
