In a statement, the carrier says that the three stations will remain open in the early hours of today to Saturday and in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday.
In Santa Apolônia, the entrance to the north zone will be opened, on the sidewalk next to the station building. In the East, the entrance is through the gate on the Tagus/Shopping Center side and in Rossio through the gate on Praça da Figueira.
“The Lisbon Metro, in close collaboration with the Lisbon City Council, is developing a set of measures to ensure compliance with the Contingency Plan for homeless people, in response to the extreme cold conditions currently being felt in the city of Lisbon”, the note says.
The carrier adds that, in addition, ‘Metro kits’, consisting of a blanket and a hat, will be distributed at the indicated stations, in order to provide greater comfort to station users at night.
The Lisbon Metro also says that, in conjunction with the Municipal Police, it will reinforce surveillance and cleaning actions in the stations that will remain open.
Since Thursday, the Lisbon City Council has been reinforcing support measures for homeless people, particularly to mitigate the effects of low temperatures.
In addition to the subway stations, the Joaquim Urbano Emergency Reception Center (CAE) will also be open with 30 beds available and transportation if necessary.
At the end of 2023, the city of Lisbon identified 3,378 homeless people, of which 594 were sleeping on the streets, with 200 more homeless people than in 2022, according to data from Lisbon City Council.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts, at least until Saturday, partly cloudy or clear skies, light to moderate winds, frost formation and a drop in minimum temperatures. A slight rise in minimum temperatures is expected for Sunday, mainly on the coast, and a slight drop in maximum temperatures.
Today, in Lisbon, a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 14 degrees Celsius are expected, and on Saturday a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 13 degrees Celsius.
For Sunday, the IPMA forecast indicates a minimum temperature of 5 degrees and a maximum temperature of 12 degrees.
