According to Portimão City Council, which is promoting the project, “this is an essential intervention to reinforce safety and energy efficiency on one of the main access routes to the city, ensuring a more functional and sustainable city”.
Due to the nature of the work and the need to ensure lighting in the tunnel, the work will take place during the day, “which may extend beyond normal operating hours and require the alternating closure of the traffic lanes”.
In other words, despite the works, the Cardosas Tunnel will never be completely closed, although traffic will have to be carried out alternately. However, despite these precautions, the intervention will mean traffic jams, so it is advisable to use the other entrances to the city.
However, between 7pm on Friday 14 February and 8am on Monday 17 February, the tunnel will be fully open to car traffic.
Portimão City Council highlights that this investment, of around 140 thousand euros, reinforces its “commitment to improving road infrastructure and road safety, ensuring a more functional and sustainable city”.
During the intervention period, the city council recommends “special attention to temporary signage on site and the use of alternative routes, in order to minimize impacts on traffic”.
