In a statement, ANEPC states that the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is forecasting rain, sometimes heavy, hail and thunderstorms, and wind, “with gusts of up to 85 kilometres/hour on the coast and up to 100 km/h in the highlands”, strong sea agitation on the coastal plain, with waves up to five metres, and snowfall at the highest points of Serra da Estrela on Friday, which could extend to lower areas from Saturday onwards.

Bad weather can cause flooding in urban areas, floods, also due to the overflowing of rivers and streams and landslides, as well as road accidents, due to slippery roads, sheets of water, accumulation of ice and/or snow or the existence of objects dragged onto traffic routes, and “thermal discomfort in the population due to increased wind intensity”.

Civil Defense also asks that the population pay attention to weather information and instructions from ANEPC and the police.
