Presented at the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL) as part of a plan to establish Albufeira as the European City of Sport, this is the biggest project to promote it.

José Carlos Rolo, the mayor of the municipality, announced a contract worth about €4 million that will be launched soon. “The goal is for the Centre to be ready sometime in 2026, unlikely at the beginning of the year”, he added. “Let’s hope that the Centre becomes a reality as soon as possible”.

This new facility will include a High-Performance Sports Centre for Gymnastics with changing rooms, meeting rooms, an Athletics Support Centre, and a 100-seat auditorium.

Another major focus of this project will be on associations, accommodating for meetings and sports clubs in the municipality. In addition, the stadium stands will be extended, adding 360 more seats.

Albufeira’s presence at the BTL also served as an opportunity for the municipality to begin the process of certification as a “Sustainable Destination”, awarded by Biosphere.

“This certification will have several dimensions, environmentally, socially, culturally, and also economically”, the mayor stated. “I want to make a more detailed presentation in Albufeira so that everyone understands the work that will be done.”
