The approved public tender aims to build 24 new homes in Vila Nova de Santo André and another 24 in Cercal do Alentejo as a part of the Local Housing Strategy (ELH).

The buildings are planned to be multi-family housing to facilitate housing for families whilst providing lower rent prices than those currently on the market, according to mayor Álvaro Beijinha. These two parishes were selected based on their municipal land and soil morphology and are scheduled to start this year. Additionally, the plan aims to include the requalification of another four homes in Santiago do Cacém, totalling 52 families helped within this programme.

Although the project was not approved to fit within the Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR), the municipality plans to move forward, in a second phase, with the construction of the 48 new homes, according to the mayor. However, Beijinha argues that the “government announced they guarantee the financing, even if not 100%, of the project that cannot be put to action within PRR deadlines”.
