The Government approved, this Thursday, the extension of the regulated electricity market until the end of 2027. The decree-law “extends regulated electricity tariffs until 31 December 2027”, indicates the statement from the Council of Ministers.

According to ECO, Luís Montenegro's executive justifies the decision with “the approximately 800 thousand consumers who are still in the regulated market, many of whom are economically vulnerable”.

In both the electricity and gas markets, the end of regulated tariffs was scheduled for 31 December 2025 in national legislation. The regulated electricity market is the responsibility of the energy regulator, which sets prices annually.

In January, following the ERSE decision, average tariffs for families were to increase by 2.1%, but the combined effect of changes in VAT on electricity and the tariff increase reduced the final bill for families by 85 cents per month for consumption of 1900 kWh and 91 cents for consumption of 5000 kWh.

The Minister of the Environment, Maria da Graça Carvalho, had already announced at the end of last year that she would extend the operation of this market. But at the time, she was aiming for the end of 2026.
