In a statement, the city government explained that the measure “aims to prevent risky situations, especially at a time when the sea continues to present adverse conditions, but when the inviting temperatures attract many visitors to the city’s beaches”.
Pre-season surveillance will take place on the weekends in May (3rd and 4th, 10th and 11th, 17th and 18th, 24th and 25th and 31st May).
After the summer season, surveillance will be carried out on the weekends from September 20 to October 12 (September 20 and 21 and 27 and 28, as well as October 4 and 5 and 11 and 12).
The measure resulted from a protocol between Sintra City Council and the Sintra Municipality Beach Association, covering Praia Grande, Adraga, Maçãs, Magoito and S. Julião.
During the pre- and post-bathing season periods, "these beaches will have two to three lifeguards to ensure the protection of visitors", highlighted the Sintra City Council.
