Lisbon and Porto concentrated more than 80 percent of the financial inflow, which was 4 percent below the last year before the pandemic (2019) but which corresponded to triple the amount verified in 2021.

In Lisbon, the rate of €2 per night generated revenue of €33.1 million. In Porto, the fee of €2 per night was worth €14.5 million, according to a survey carried out by Dinheiro Vivo.

Cascais, Faro, Vila Real de Santo António, Mafra, Vila Nova de Gaia, Santa Cruz (Madeira), Braga, Sintra, and Óbidos were the other nine municipalities that have brought in a tourist tax.

From 2023, the tourist tax on overnight stays will also be charged in Póvoa de Varzim, Viana do Castelo and in the municipalities of the Algarve.
