Bunch will speak about the need for museums around the world to
collaborate to recover and recognize the painful legacy of the slave trade, in
order to promote social justice and new visions for the future.
The program continues on January 9, with the participation of
Bunch in a symposium, also at MUHNAC, dedicated to the theme “Accounting for
racism: the social memory of the slave trade”. Throughout this day, new ways
for public institutions to face the history, memory, and legacies of slavery and
colonialism in Portugal, Europe, and the Portuguese-speaking world will be
discussed.
Both events are open to the public and free of charge. The event
on January 9th (9am-5pm) requires registration via the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/reckoning-with-racism-the-social-memory-of-the

Researchers, curators, conservators, museum professionals,
historians, archaeologists, afro-descendant activist groups, and civil society
from Portugal, Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom,
and the United States will explore important questions, promote conversations,
and respond to questions about diversity in the investigation and
representation of this past and its presence in current issues such as social
and racial justice at local, national and global levels.
Both events are intended to promote public discussion about how,
despite slavery having shaped our modern world, there remains a void in our
museums, memorials, and public institutions about its history and heritage.
