“In Portugal, the inactive population stood, in 2021, at
around 5.1 million individuals, with 106.6 inactive people per 100 employees in
the country”, says INE in the Regional Statistical Yearbooks.
In the year under review, the Alentejo (111.7), Azores and
Lisbon (111.5) and Centre (107.9) were the regions with a rate higher than the
national rate.
Conversely, the Algarve (105.1), Madeira (104.9) and North
(101.2) were below the country's average.
As for the unemployment rate, which dropped from 7.0% in
2020 to 6.6% in 2021, the Algarve (8.2%) and Madeira (7.9%) had the highest
rates, with the Centre (5.8 %) the only region with a percentage lower than the
national average.
