The government has said it wants to facilitate access to housing in the Algarve region.

The Government has conceded there is a "serious problem" of access to housing in the Algarve and said it is committed to finding solutions to facilitate rentals to the neediest families and the middle class. Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, said the Algarve is, after Lisbon, the region with the greatest difficulties in accessing housing.

Can you advise on steps I must take to obtain a non habitual residents permit? I have just bought a house near to Óbidos and I have a NIF number. Must I now go to the local Town Hall to get a residency permit? I am English and the UK leaves the EU at this year end so I need to resolve this, I believe, before then, is that correct?

I'm thinking of retiring to Portugal around August or September next year. I would like to rent in a small town near the coast..I'm a British citizen who has lived in the USA for the past 40 years. Can you give me any advice?

Exactly, action needed! Housing costs in the Algarve have been pushed up by the increasing focus on accommodating foreign visitors and residents, and the luxurious new developments are beyond the means of the local population. Finding a balance is important because everyone needs to live somewhere.

Why doesnt the government create a way to allow the sale of abandoned or unfinished housing instead of letting them sit and become more ugly ruins. It is impossible to even find out who was the last owner of these properties let alone make any offer on the house. Of course given how slowly any permitting or contractor work is done it probably would still turn out to be a waste of time making the house livable

David. That’s all correct. Go to your town hall and get the papers. You haven’t got long to get it sorted and it’s really quite straightforward.

What rubbish by the government, they create the laws that create the problems then point the finger at the citizens, for me, coming from a family of owning apartments to let in various countries, i have sold all our properties in this country with the exception of 2 we use for summer vacation, i prefer to leave them empty than to rent them out, why, because,,,

The government, the huge amount of taxes we have to pay them, direct and indirect, the monthly online reporting, no government subsidy for anything.

The tenants, they are well known to the locals, habitual non payers, we sign a contract with them, notorised and a copy handed to the tax department, after 3 months they stop paying rent, it takes about 18 months to evict them, if they have underage children, forget it, you've lost your apartment, if they are elderly, sick or retired, forget it, you've lost your apartment, and on and on it goes, so the headline says ''The government has said it wants to facilitate access to housing in the Algarve region.'' and the locals are rolling around in laughter, what a joke, why don't they build more housing for the needy. I'm not renting to anyone,
