According to the national energy regulator, the average cost of unleaded petrol is the sixth highest in Europe, while diesel is the seventh most expensive.
Taxes account for 63 percent of the price of fuel in Portugal. Nonetheless, even before the government inflates the cost of petrol, the base price here is also above the EU average. The average cost of unleaded petrol stood at €1.50 during the first quarter of the year, while diesel was priced at €1.32.
