The position of the Algarve's municipalities was expressed by the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), which in a statement asked the Government “to maintain support for the Algarve businesses who prepared to receive UK tourists and who, therefore, are now in an even more difficult situation”.
The decision to remove Portugal from the list of countries considered safe comes into force from Tuesday at 4am.
From then onwards, anyone arriving in the United Kingdom from Portugal is required to undergo a quarantine period of 10 days and to undergo two PCR tests during this period.
“The Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve [AMAL], representing the 16 mayors of the region, condemns the decision of the United Kingdom. In AMAL's view, it contradicts the effort being made by European countries to allow the movement of people and contribute to economic recovery”, said the organisation chaired by António Pina.
AMAL acknowledged that the British decision “took the region by surprise”, and was taken “shortly after a positive expectation was created, which reanimated the Algarve”, with Portugal's entry on the “green list” on May 17, and “it has a huge negative impact on a region that, being so dependent on tourism, has already been one of the most punished since the beginning of the pandemic”.
The same source said that, after the decision, "many English cancelled their holidays in the Algarve", where entrepreneurs were relying on reservations that are now being cancelled and that led them to hire more workers to respond to the increase in work.
“For this reason, the mayors appeal to the government to maintain support for the Algarve's businessmen as a way to minimise the impact of any commitments assumed, as well as the postponement of the process of recovery of the regional economy”, said AMAL.
The Algarve's municipalities also hope that the British decision “does not contaminate the perception that other countries” have of the region and the country and ensure that the Algarve is “prepared to receive tourists in safety”.

Portugal should focus on attracting other countries instead of constantly chasing after British tourists. After all there are millions of people from other countries who don't even know about the Algarve or the Alentejo and would be happy to visit.
By the way Portugal please start paving the entire roads and not just bits and pieces. You did receive billions of Euros from the EU for this.

I hope that the British decades end now, and a lot of people can come from other EU-Countrys, the Portugese Tourismo needs more feets to stay in the future, so it is time now to change the marketing strategie!

As a Dutch tourist in the Algarve at the moment I am of the opinion, that Boris Johnson has lost all contact with reality and does not have a thorough realization of the economic situation. If you follow the rules and take care, the danger is minimized. At the end of last years my wife and I stayed in the Algarve 3 months and now another one without any problem. A rambling policy by Boris Johnson, which will not be forgotten by his compatriots, when a new Electron presents itself.

Johnson and his motely crew haven't a clue. The 'third wave* has already started in the UK so they have probably done Portugal a favour by taking it off the green list

Maybe, Grant Shappes or other members of the UK cabinet have shares in UK hotels and decided that the money being spent by Brits in Portugal should be spent at home.

Arrived in Algarve Portugal 2 hours before announcement .Every precautions being taken over here very angry at Boris as we had to jump through hoops to get here .More expense to get other tests when arrive home .Thanks PM

The government cannot stop people freedom but by doing such thing they are taken away or at least given no other option from UK residents to only use UK as holidays choice. Nobody will travel for holidays if they’re forcing to be home 10 after return, and loose their jobs .... just wondering when people will say enough is enough....

I share the disappointment with Portugal's removal from British "green " list. It is utter disgrace and unjustified. The holiday makers should be able to claim compensation against the government for the loss of their holidays. Its all politics to me and have no idea what they are doing.
