The measure was announced on 16 August by the task force responsible for the vaccination plan, which explained that the vaccination of these users with the first dose of one of the two vaccines approved for this age group - Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna - will be carried out on the weekend of 28 and 29 August. This coming weekend (21 and 22 August) will be for the first young people between 12 and 15 years old who made the appointment between the 12 and 14 of this month. Self-scheduling is done through the portal www.covid19.min-saude.pt for users aged 18 or over and will be suspended for three days, and resumed from 22 August.

According to the calendar already released by the task-force, the second doses of vaccine for minors between 12 and 15 years old will be administered on the weekends of 11 and 12 and 18 and 19 September, so that this age group can complete the vaccination process before the start of the school year. The recommendation of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) for universal vaccination of children and young people between 12 and 15 years old was made known on 10 August and is thus no longer limited to specific situations, such as high risk cases.

Portugal already has 66 percent of the population with complete vaccination against Covid-19 and 76 percent with at least one dose administered, with those over 65 years of age almost fully vaccinated. According to the most recent vaccination report, released by the DGS on 17 August and with data recorded up to 15 August, the country already counts 7,791,486 people with at least one dose of vaccine and 6,760,777 who completed the respective vaccine. The vaccination campaign against Covid-19 began in Portugal on 27 December, 2020, with single-dose (Janssen) and double-dose (Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca) vaccines currently being administered.
