“The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.1 million guests and 5.6 million overnight stays in September 2021, corresponding to increases of 52.3 percent and 58.4 percent, respectively (+35.5 percent and +47.9 percent in August, in the same order)”, according to INE data.
According to the institute, the levels reached in September were, however, lower than those observed in September 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, with the number of guests and overnight stays decreasing by 28.9 percent and 26.6 percent, respectively.
In September, the domestic market contributed with 2.6 million overnight stays and increased 26.8 percent, continuing to surpass the levels of the same period in 2019 (+15.6 percent).
Overnight stays from non residents doubled compared to September 2020 (+100.7 percent) to three million, but were about half of those registered in September 2019 (-43.9 percent), indicates the INE.
“The overnight stays recorded in the first nine months of 2021 have already surpassed the value recorded for the entire year of 2020”, highlights the INE, indicating that in this period, the total overnight stays increased by 19.5 percent, with growth of 28.7 percent in residents and 9.4 percent in non-residents.
In September, the British market accounted for 19.1 percent of total overnight stays from non residents, followed by the German markets (13.2 percent share), Spanish (12.4 percent) and French (10.5 percent).
During the first nine months of 2021, the main growths were registered in the Polish (+160.7 percent), Irish (+111.7 percent), Belgian (+60.7 percent), Swiss (+51.3 percent) markets and French (+38.2 percent).
The biggest decreases were seen in the Chinese (-74.6 percent), Canadian (-73.6 percent), Brazilian (-57.7 percent) and Russian (-53.3 percent) markets.
