“In August 2022, the number of deaths was 9,257, which is
lower than that recorded in July 2022 (1,462 fewer deaths; -13.6%) and close to
the value observed in August 2021 (39 more deaths; +0.4%)”, informed the INE.
According to the same source, between January and August of
this year, 83,971 people died, 1,366 fewer than in the same period in 2021
(-1.6%).
In August 2022, the number of deaths due to covid-19 also
decreased, to 227 (233 less than in July 2022) and representing 2.5% of the
total number of deaths: “Compared to August 2021, there were a decrease of 155
deaths due to covid-19”.
Regarding births, the institute reported last July, 7,150
live births, an increase of 2.0% compared to June 2021 (7,009). The total
number of live births recorded in the first seven months of 2022 (45,835) was
higher than that recorded in the same period of 2021 (45,059), representing a
further 776 (+1.7%) live births.
Negative balance
The natural balance of the Portuguese population continued,
however, to be negative.
“In the month of July 2022, the natural balance was -3,555,
worsening compared to the same month of 2021, when it recorded the value of
-1,788. In the first seven months of 2022, the accumulated value of the natural
balance was -28,730, showing a reduction in relation to the value observed in
the same period of 2021 (-31,027)”, detailed the INE.
Weddings
In July, 4,868 weddings were celebrated, 14.8% more than in
the same month of 2021 (626 more weddings). In the first seven months of 2022,
18,818 marriages were celebrated, 5,903 more than in the same period of 2021.
