Speaking to the Lusa agency, the mayor of Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá, indicated that the metrobus project is recommended in the PU review proposal, which has already been presented and is now going for public discussion.
“It is public transport with its own lane and priority over all traffic to save time and offer the city a mobility alternative that allows many people to do without a private car”, he summarised.
Pinto de Sá admitted that “it is a very ambitious, long-term project, but fundamental to building the future of Évora”, so “an in-depth discussion is required” on how it can be implemented and obtain the respective financing.
Also speaking to Lusa, the coordinator of the PU review, Jorge Carvalho, explained that the metrobus project involves the circulation of a type of electric bus in a “dedicated and exclusive corridor” with “priority in relation to other routes”.
According to this urban planning specialist, the proposed route for the metrobus is 14.5 kilometres long, has several stops and is “essentially circular, with two axes, one to the north and the other to the south”.
Regarding the review of the Évora PU, Jorge Carvalho highlighted that the proposal now presented “begins to conceive the evolution of the city based on the idea of a corridor dedicated to public transport”.
"The entire city is designed with a sequence, mainly of pedestrian circulation, which then runs through squares, where people meet and where we can stimulate the urban experience.", he said.
The coordinator of the PU review summarised that the document proposes “a new mobility paradigm” for Évora, based on the metrobus and “on smooth mobility axes, articulating all parts of the city” in the Alentejo.
According to the president of the municipality, the proposed review of the Évora PU will now go to public discussion, from a “perspective of defending the collective interest and compatibility with the private resources so that it can be mobilised”.
However, the mayor predicted that it will not be possible to approve the plan in the current term, until the next municipal elections, which should take place in September or October this year.
