The exercise, “A Terra Treme” (www.aterratreme.pt), is
organised every year by the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority
(ANEPC), in collaboration with various public and private entities, and aims to
help the population to know how to act in the event of an earthquake.
With this initiative, ANEPC intends to inform the population
about what they should do before, during and after an earthquake, especially
what preventive measures and self-protection behaviours to adopt.
According to ANEPC, the exercise comprises performing “three simple gestures that can make a difference to those who practice them in the event of an earthquake”.
Civil Protection also mentions that the action takes place
for one minute, in which the participants, individually or collectively
(families, schools, companies, public, private or associative institutions),
are invited to perform the three self-protection gestures: drop, cover and hold
on.
Across the country, the Regional Emergency and Civil
Protection Commands (CREPC) and the District Relief Operations Commands (CDOS)
of ANEPC will, in partnership with local educational communities, fire
departments, municipal civil protection services and the other civil protection
agents, promote awareness-raising actions on the topic of seismic risk and
self-protection measures.
I note Portimao now has Tsunami warning signs up.
This needs to be rolled out across other parts of the Algarve where towns and other areas are basically at sea level.
There must be more education and public awareness about what to do and where to go.
Having spent many years living in Japan,I am acutely aware of earthquakes and Tsunamis.Much more need to be done in Portugal.
The reason so many people perished in Lisbon from the last major earthquake was because they all ran to the mouth of the Tagus river and were consequently drowned by a tsunami.
Educate educate educate.Prepare prepare prepare.
