"The Government approved the increase in the national
minimum wage to come into effect from January 1, 2023, to go from the 705 euros
we have today to 760 euros", said Minister Ana Mendes Godinho, stressing
that this value means that since 2015 the minimum wage has increased by around
50%.
The rise of 55 euros, she said, "is the biggest
increase in absolute terms" of the national minimum wage.
In October, under the medium-term agreement to improve
incomes, the Government put forward a proposal to increase the minimum wage
from the current 705 euros to 760 euros in January 2023.
According to the agreement signed between the Government,
UGT, and the employers' confederations, the objective is to reach 900 euros by
the end of the legislature (2026).
The Government proposes that the minimum wage evolves to 760 euros in 2023, to 810 euros in 2024, to 855 euros in 2025, and to 900 euros in 2026.
The Portuguese 'culture' of low wages undermines its economic persective., 760€ minus discounts is absolutely not enough to live and too little for a month's work.

@Diogo F., a business can only pay its employees what they can afford. Wages are determined by productivity, so low wages in Portugal reflect the low productivity of those employees. Not everyone in Portugal earns a low wage, and it's not a business's problem to provide a wage high enough to live on.

Billy Bisset: as much as I have to agree that Pt services are at deplorable levels, don´t have good/high performance standards, and Costumer service is inexistant or just plainly abusive (in general), I´d like to see you live on 705 or even 760 euros a month without additional sources of income. Some people are not public servants, or work in the Tourism or Tech sectors, and they do honest, hard work- but those are understandably “invisible” to you from where YOU´RE STANDING. It´s very easy “to burp Cod fillets” when nothing ever bites you in your own a**. Go live on that money, and then come back here to defend same argument, by all means.

Guida, Noone prevents people from obtaining a profession. Education in Portugal is almost free.

I live in this country last 8 years. Portuguese people are hard working and underpaid people. The minimum vage is set in every country by government and it is obligation by all companies to follow it. Since current minimum salary is 705€ I should add that Portuguese people are tolerant as well. Any company who is not able to pay decent salaries to their employees should be out of business. I have decent salary, and I guess Billy as well. But to live in country in which we come as guests ( although I'm Portuguese citizen now ) and than lecture local people about what they should or shouldn't be paid, is at least arrogant. So Billy enjoy your life and let Portuguese to try to make their life's better and please do not lecture.
