The accident report and road inspection by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) for November 2022 reveals that, in the first eleven months of last year, 118.2 million vehicles were inspected, which resulted in the detection of 1 .1 million violations by the authorities, which represents an increase of 4% compared to 2021.
The speed control radar system managed by ANSR contributed to this increase in violations, which detected 400,141 violations between January and November, an increase of 20.8% over the same period of the previous year.
According to ANSR, a total of 744,219 speeding violations were recorded up to November, up 18.5%, but driving under the influence of alcohol was the offense that showed the most significant increase (+32.9%), when detected 27,390.
Road Safety justifies this increase in fines for drinking and driving “largely as a result of the sharp drop in the previous year”.
Last year, there was also a slight increase in infringements due to lack of insurance (+2.5%), totalling 15,503.
Regarding road crime, measured in total number of arrests, ANSR indicates that it increased by 22.7% in the period from January to November 2022 compared to 2021, reaching 28.4 thousand drivers, owing to 54.7% driving under the influence of alcohol and lack of legal license to drive (33.8%).
The report also mentions that the number of drivers who lost points on their driving license was 517,200 by the end of November 2022, having been left without a driving license, since the entry into force of the license points system, in June 2016, a total of 2,363 drivers.

Why would any reasonable awake or aware fellow human wish to track the GNR or give away their location. Our Portuguese road and vehicle behaviour is not something to hide from anymore and I understand this will cause a lot of discomfort however. It is about time we are all fully aware and in turn tackle one of Portugals true craziness as in this daily ongoing behind the wheel behavioural cancer. We have not been and are not the kind, forgiving, empathic, patient peoples we claim to be or have others believe and it is good not a bad thing to come to terms with our skeletons in the cupboard, so to speak.
