The Lisbon Metro has an ongoing plan to improve accessibility and modernise mechanical equipment at stations and have shared where works are taking place.

"The Metropolitano de Lisboa has 117 elevators, 234 escalators and 10 moving walkways throughout its network. Repairing faults in this equipment is a priority for this company and several actions are carried out daily to ensure accessibility and safety of customers", reveals the company, in a statement.

According to Metro, these are the improvement works that are currently underway:

Baixa-Chiado

Modernisation and replacement of escalators

Investment: 1.5 million euros

Expected completion of works: end of 2023

Baixa-Chiado

Modernisation and replacement of 1 elevator (starting on October 12th)

Investment: 323 thousand euros

Expected completion of works: February 2024

Campo Grande

Modernisation and replacement of escalators

Investment: 2.9 million euros

Expected completion of works: end of 2023

Alameda I and II

Modernisation and replacement of 5 elevators (starting on September 5th)

Investment: 1 million euros

Expected completion of works: end of 2023

Carnide

Escalator maintenance

Investment: 55.5 thousand euros

Expected completion of work: end of September 2023

Pontinha

Maintenance of escalators (mid-life maintenance intervention)

Investment: 74 thousand euros

Expected completion of work: October 2023

The carrier adds that "contracts are also planned to be carried out to improve access to the Campo Pequeno, Picoas, Martim Moniz and Intendente stations, representing a total value of 7.9 million euros, ensuring that these stations also have full accessibility".

"At the date of this announcement, 11.1% of escalators and 9.4% of elevators are out of operation due to damage and in the process of being repaired", explains Metro.
