The councils assume the costs of repairing the damage and then the Government contributes, having already provided 70 million, according to Jornal de Notícias.
These phenomena have affected 150 municipalities since 2017, with the majority of municipalities being concerned about the increase in this type of extreme events, particularly after last year's winter floods, which were the most costly. Local authorities suffered a loss of 97 million euros just to deal with the floods, having received 48 million in support from the Government.
Loures was the municipality with the greatest loss in last winter's floods, with a declared expense of 19.2 million. “There were lands that collapsed, roads that became impassable and a lot of damaged urban furniture. There were four million in equipment alone and 16 million in roads”, said Mayor Ricardo Leão.
