According to the Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the warning for the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria is in force from 5:30am until 12:00 pm today.
Northwest waves of 7 to 8 meters are expected, reaching a maximum height of 15 meters, indicates the IPMA.
The remaining districts of the Portuguese coast (Lisbon, Setúbal, Beja and Faro) are under orange warning until 9pm today, with waves expected from the west or northwest with a significant height of 5 to 6.5 meters, which could reach 14 meters in height.
Due to sea unrest, 13 sea bars are today closed to all navigation and five are restricted, according to information available on the Portuguese Navy website.
According to the Navy, the bars in Caminha, Douro, Esposende, Figueira da Foz, Vila Praia de Âncora, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Ericeira, S. Martinho do Porto, Alvor, Vila Real de Santo António, Quarteira and Tavira.
The bars in Aveiro, Leixões, Viana do Castelo, Faro and Olhão are restricted.
The remaining 29 sea bars are open to all navigation.
The IPMA also issued an orange warning for the North Coast of Madeira and Porto Santo due to maritime unrest between 9pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday, later changing to yellow.
The Madeira archipelago is also under a yellow warning due to the forecast of periods of rain or showers, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms (between 12:00 and 21:00 on Saturday) and strong southwest winds with gusts of up to 70 km/h, heading northwest with gusts of up to 90 km/h.
The wind warning will be in force between 3pm on Saturday and 6am on Sunday.
