The authorities predict that the most critical period of rain will last until 3 pm today, having considered that the district is also under orange warning due to sea unrest (southeast waves 3 to 4 meters high and southerly waves of 6 at 8 meters), wind (gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour) and risk of thunderstorms.
The red warning for precipitation is issued if rain is expected to exceed 40 liters per square meter in one hour or greater than 60 liters per square meter in a period of six hours.
The IPMA maintains the orange warning for today in four other districts (Évora, Portalegre, Beja and Setúbal), with “rainfall that is sometimes heavy, and may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts”.
IPMA also issued yellow warnings for Santarém, Lisbon and Castelo Branco, due to precipitation.
According to IPMA, the orange warning is issued whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation”. The yellow warning applies in “risk situations for certain activities depending on the weather situation”.
