The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are under red warning until 3pm today due to sea unrest, with waves expected from the northwest with a significant height of 7 to 8 meters, which could reach a maximum height of 14 to 15 meters.
These seven districts will once again be under red warning between 6pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday, with waves from the northwest measuring 7 to 9 meters being expected, reaching a maximum height of 15/16 metres.
The IPMA also issued a red warning for the districts of Faro, Beja, Setúbal between 06:00am and 12:00pm on Sunday due to sea unrest, with waves from the northwest measuring 7 to 8 meters, reaching a maximum height of 14/15 meters.
Also because of the strong swell, IPMA placed the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga under orange warning until 6pm today and then between 12pm on Sunday and to 03:00 on Monday.
The district of Faro will be under orange warning until 00:00 on Saturday and then until 06:00 on Sunday and again from 12:00 on Sunday until 03:00 on Monday.
Setúbal will be under orange warning between 00:00 and 06:00 on Sunday and between 12:00 on Sunday and 03:00 on Monday.
Due to the state of the sea, the bars of Aveiro, Caminha, Douro, Esposende, Figueira da Foz, Vila Praia de Âncora, Póvoa do Varzim, Viana do Castelo, Vila do Conde, Portinho da Ericeira and São Martinho do Porto are closed at all times. Navigation and Leixões are restricted, according to information available on the Navy's website.
The IPMA also issued an orange warning, but due to the sometimes heavy and persistent rainfall, especially in mountainous regions, for the districts of Vila Real, Viana do Castelo and Braga between 3:00 am and 9:00 am on Saturday.
Also because of the heavy rain, the districts of Viseu, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra will be under yellow warning between 06:00 and 12:00 on Saturday and Porto and Guarda between 03:00 and 09:00: 00 on Saturday.
The Institute also warns yellow for the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Castelo Branco, Aveiro and Coimbra (between 06:00 and 18:00 on Saturday, Évora, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria and Portalegre ( between 00:00 and 15:00 on Saturday), Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga (between 03:00 and 21:00 on Saturday) because of the strong wind.
After the effects of the Ciarán depression, with sometimes strong winds, sea agitation and precipitation, the IPMA reported on Thursday that a cold frontal surface, associated with the Domingos depression, moving from the Atlantic to the east, is expected to affect the continent, with strong and persistent rain on Saturday, in the North and Center, especially on the coast and mountainous regions, strong wind and sea disturbances.
Although mainland Portugal “will not be directly hit by the storm, an associated cold frontal surface” will cross the territory on Saturday, causing “periods of strong and persistent rain on Saturday night and morning in the North and Center.
The cold frontal surface is expected to cross the Madeira archipelago during the end of Saturday, “although without severity”.
“The most significant will be the increase in maritime agitation, which will be from the northwest with a significant height of five to six meters on the 5th on the north coast of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo”, stated the IPMA, advising, due to this meteorological situation, monitoring weather forecasts and warnings.
