Portuguese voters “can vote on the move at any polling station established in the national territory or abroad”, for the elections for the European Parliament. These will take place in 2024 and between the 6th and 9th of June, states a decree-law published in the Diário da República.
This news comes seven months after the government announced that voters will be able to vote for the next European elections at any polling station in the country, regardless of the municipality where they are registered, to facilitate voting and thus reduce abstention.
In Portugal, polling stations will be opened for voting to begin at 8 am, the diploma states.
Envelopes with advance votes in mobility and with advance votes from hospitalized patients and prisoners “are kept in the custody of the mayor of the place where the voter voted”. At the same time, envelopes containing advance votes from those displaced abroad “are kept in the custody of the person in charge of the post or consular section of the place where the voter voted”.
The election for the European Parliament takes place every five years. After the election, Parliament votes to elect the new President of the European Commission, a position currently held by Ursula von der Leyen.
