With a diverse programme, with a clear emphasis on the Flower Float Parade, this celebration symbolises renewal and hope. The Flower Festival fills Madeira with unforgettable colors, decorations, and perfumes.
According to Jornal da Madeira, embroidery and crafts will take center stage in this year's Flower Festival celebrations, through a set of promotional actions guided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Crafts Institute (IVBAM).
IVBAM's main objectives are to value and boost the arts that are part of the regional identity, promoting and contributing to the preservation of the arts.
From the 2 to the 26 of May, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, Madeira Embroidery is highlighted on Avenida Arriaga, in front of the Funchal Cathedral.
The Madeira Embroidery Pavilion has an exhibition, informative and commercial dynamic, considering the participation of four authorized producers of Madeira Embroidery, namely: Abreu & Araújo, Bordal – Bordados da Madeira, Gês Bordados and Luís de Sousa, who will give the see part of their collections.
This space will also have the presence of an embroiderer on Wednesday afternoons, a prominent figure in this art, who will be demonstrating her craft.
With regards to Madeira Crafts, in order to create greater dynamics, this year, it will have two reference spaces, a pavilion located in Praça do Povo, from the 2nd to the 19th of May and in the Madeira Crafts Store, located on Rua dos Ferreiros, from the 2nd to the 31st of May.
The Madeira Crafts Pavilion is the result of a partnership established between the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) and IVBAM, as part of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Laurissilva Forest's elevation to UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
“This Pavilion aims to highlight the connection between nature and the regional craftsmanship that comes from it, which is why arts and crafts workshops that integrate natural raw materials are organized in this space, in a dynamic of themed weeks”, concludes the same note.
The construction of the Wall of Hope will take place on May 4th, in Praça do Município, where around 700 children will place a flower as a sign of peace for the world.
The highlight of the festivities occurs on May 5th with the Allegorical Flower Parade, which runs along the marginal avenues of the capital of Madeira, in which 1,800 extras participate, distributed among 14 groups.
In total, 3,600 people are involved in this year's edition of the Flower Festival, marked by several initiatives, such as concerts, construction of floral carpets, exhibitions, a classic car parade, and also a golf tournament with 100 participants from various countries.
