According to Postal, the Algarve is known for presenting difficulty in finding affordable homes. This can be attributed to the fact that 14 of its 16 municipalities have median prices higher than the national average.
According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), compiled by idealista, there are only two municipalities in the Algarve with housing prices below the national median (1,611 euros/m2) which includes Alcoutim (795 euros/m2) and Monchique (1,057 euros /m2), both located in the interior of the Algarve and without direct access to ocean beaches.
Therefore, it is possible to purchase a 100 m2 house for less than 110 thousand euros in these municipalities.
The third most economical municipality to buy houses in the Algarve is São Brás de Alportel which reaches 1,843 euros/m2. In 2023, a 100 m2 house was sold for a median value of more than 180 thousand euros in this municipality.
Despite price discrepancies, these are the three municipalities where buying a house is most affordable in the Algarve region. However, none of them were among the 50 most popular municipalities to purchase housing between October and December last year.
The three most expensive municipalities, Loulé (3,269 euros/m2), Lagos (3,182 euros/m2) and Vila do Bispo (3,162 euros/m2), are also not among the most sought-after. In these three municipalities, a 100 m2 house was sold for a median value of more than 300 thousand euros.
Maybe you should write an article on 'Financial Apartheid' house price and rental mean young Portuguese can't live in the Algarve. Yesterday I was in a cafe, what Portuguese earning €700 a month can afford two coffees and two pieces of cake for ......€20, this is financial apartheid, the only Portuguese here will be the cleaner. I hate fascism but there is a reason why why nearly one in three voted for CHEGA here. It's understandable that local especially young people are saying, Enough!

That must be a really nice cafe you were in.
Pao de Aldeia is a great padaria in Albufeira.
We never spend more than 7 euros there.
Even Riviera a bit more upscale is less than $10 euros.
$20 for 2 cakes and coffee pretty steep but that was your choice, there are plenty of places you can go for a lesser price and not sacrifice quality.
It does cost more to live in the Algarve, just like any city in any country where you are close to the ocean.

For me a bica is 0,90 cent or sometimes 1 euro.. a piece of cake is max 2 euros… of course if you goblin tourist places you will pay a bit more.. good that you are not a Chega.. but you know that fake news is one of their ‘weapons’ too…
