According to Postal, the result of this fascination was the creation of a book that brings together a selection of the most impressive ocean pools, including a Portuguese one. In "Seapools”, published by Batsford Books, 66 saltwater pools from various parts of the globe are cataloged, telling the stories of these structures and the communities that use them.
In 1940, an old set of saltwater pools was transformed into a single ocean pool on the coast of Porto Moniz in Portugal, more specifically on the island of Madeira, by building a concrete retaining wall. The white concrete and curved edge give the pool a distinctly modern look. Over the years, the pool has undergone several upgrades and was completed in 1975.
These pools are formed by volcanic rocks, creating a unique natural setting where the sea water constantly enters and renews itself, keeping the pools clean and fresh.
Although the Porto Moniz pools are safe, it is crucial to follow the lifeguards’ instructions and be aware of the sea conditions, especially during periods of high tide or storms.
The pools also have a bar, changing rooms, a children’s playground, a first aid center, sun loungers and parasols for hire, and a constant presence of lifeguards. They are open all year round from 9 am to 5 pm in winter and from 9 am to 7 pm in summer.
