"The President of the Republic congratulates judoka Patrícia Sampaio for the bronze medal won at the Paris Olympic Games. National sport and judo in particular have a new Olympic medalist, who deserves to be highlighted and congratulated", reads the official website of the Presidency.
Patrícia Sampaio (13th favourite) won one of the two bronze medals in the category, beating Japanese Rika Takayama, ninth in the world and seventh favourite among the 22 judokas registered in the category, in the decisive fight, her fifth at the Champ-de-Mars Arena, with a second waza-ari, resulting in ippon, obtained with 01.02 minutes to go.

Sampaio's bronze is the fourth for Portuguese judo in the Olympic Games, after the medals won by Nuno Delgado (Sydney2000, in -81 kg), Telma Monteiro (Rio2016, -57 kg) and Jorge Fonseca (Tokyo2020, -100 kg).
