According to a press release from the Visit Azores Association, from the beginning of March until November 2025, Edelweiss Air will operate a weekly frequency to Ponta Delgada Airport, on the island of São Miguel.
From May, the carrier will introduce a second weekly frequency, which will continue until October, and during the months of June to September there will be a third weekly frequency.
The new route connecting Zurich to Terceira Island will have a weekly frequency from June to September.
According to Visit Azores, the entity responsible for the external promotion of the archipelago, this new route represents "a unique opportunity to increase the island's visibility and better distribute tourist flows, contributing to a more balanced and sustainable development of the islands".
The aircraft that will make the connections will be the Airbus A320-NEO, with 174 seats and capacity to transport 2,088 passengers to Lajes airport.
Visit Azores emphasises that this action is the result of "a strong investment" in the Swiss market, in tenth place in the ranking of tourist sending markets for the Autonomous Region of the Azores, with a number of overnight stays of 26,115 in 2023, which represents a growth of 30% compared to 2022.
Quoted in the press release, the association's president, Luis Capdeville, said that the expansion of Edelweiss Air's operations to the region "strengthens connectivity" with Europe and marked "the growing attractiveness of the Azores" as an excellent tourist destination.
