According to quick statistics on tourist activity from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in September, resident overnight stays registered “a slight decrease” (-0.3%, after +4.7% in August), totalling 2 .3 million, while foreign markets grew 3.5% (+3.4% in August), to 6.1 million overnight stays.
"Tourism activity maintained [its] growth trajectory, but once again showed signs of slowing down", notes the statistical institute.
Considering the third quarter of 2024 overnight stays increased by 3.0% (+2.9% in the second quarter), with overnight stays by residents growing by 1.1% (-0.7% in the second quarter) and overnight stays by non-residents growing 3.9% (+4.3% in the previous quarter).
INE points out, however, that the second quarter results were influenced by the effect of the Easter holiday period, which this year was spread between March (first quarter) and April (second quarter), whereas in the previous year, it was concentrated only in the second quarter.
In the first nine months of the year, overnight stays increased by 3.9%, with increases of 1.3% for residents and 5.0% for non-residents.
