The data comes from the Portuguese Hotel Association (AHP), which released the results for the 3rd Quarter of this year, highlighting the positive performance of the national hotel sector.

According to AHP, the “results confirm the growth trajectory in the summer months, despite signs of slowdown felt since the beginning of the year”.

During the summer period, tourist developments across the country registered 10.2 million guests (+4%), accompanied by 28 million overnight stays (+3%) and 2.5 billion euros in total revenue ( +9%).

“Despite the relative growth in relation to 2023, naturally and as predicted, 2-digit year-on-year growth is no longer recorded, as in the previous year”, adds AHP.

The average price per occupied room (ARR) was 145 euros (+6%), while the rent per available room (RevPAR) increased to 102 euros (+6%). The occupancy rate remained stable at 70%.

Main markets

In terms of source markets, in percentage terms, North America maintained strong growth, with the USA rising +9% from guests and +10% in nights, and Canada recording +12% of guests and +13% in nights.

Poland stood out as the market with the highest relative growth (+21% in guests and +18% in overnight stays), especially in regions such as Madeira and Greater Lisbon.

Although the French market continues to be one of the main sources of tourists and revenue for Portugal, currently the 5th and 2nd market, respectively, in this 3rd Quarter there was a reduction of -3% in guests and overnight stays, confirming the downward trend since the beginning of the year.

However, “according to analysis by AHP Research, and despite the decrease in volume, the French market stood out for its high purchasing power, generating average revenues of €915 per night – the highest among all issuing markets”.

The regions of Greater Lisbon, North and Algarve continue to attract the majority of French tourists, with emphasis on the North, which received 162.5 thousand guests.

It was also in the Algarve and Greater Lisbon that the French market recorded the biggest drops: -8% in guests and nights in the Algarve and -6% in guests and nights in Greater Lisbon.
