Among the many sources of clean energy, wave energy stands out as a powerful yet largely untapped resource. Eco Wave Power, a trailblazing Israeli company, is now taking significant strides in this domain with its groundbreaking wave energy technology. Recently, the company announced a $3 million fundraising initiative to finance its first commercial wave energy project in Portugal, marking a critical step in the global transition to cleaner energy.

As waves rise and fall, the floaters drive hydraulic pistons that compress biodegradable hydraulic fluid. This fluid flows through a closed-loop system, powering a hydraulic motor and spinning a generator to produce electricity. The generated electricity is then fed directly into the power grid through an inverter.

The system is not only efficient but also designed with resilience in mind. When wave conditions become too extreme, the floaters automatically rise above the water to avoid damage, resuming operation as soon as conditions stabilize. This adaptability ensures uninterrupted performance while protecting technology from harsh marine environments. Furthermore, the system can begin generating electricity with waves as small as 0.5 meters, making it highly versatile for different coastal regions.

Portugal, a country renowned for its commitment to renewable energy, is an ideal host for Eco Wave Power’s first commercial installation. The project, to be located in the city of Porto, represents a landmark achievement for wave energy technology. This initial installation, with a capacity of one megawatt, is expected to pave the way for further expansion to four additional sites, eventually reaching a combined capacity of twenty megawatts. Beyond its technical and environmental contributions, the facility will house a unique wave energy museum and education center, offering the public a glimpse into the transformative potential of ocean energy.
