According to information shared by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), the positive numbers for December (27.1% more spectators compared to the same period in 2023 and a one-third increase in revenue, which placed it as the best December since 2018) did not compensate for the losses in theater admissions for the year as a whole.

The 11.8 million viewers recorded in 2024 are not only below the 2023 numbers but are significantly below the 15.5 million reached in 2019, the year immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gross box office revenue in 2024 was €73.2 million, up from €72.9 million in 2023, justified by the increase in ticket prices.

The list of the 10 most-watched films of the year is made up entirely of works of North American origin, with “Inside Out 2” leading the way, with 1.3 million viewers, followed by “Deadpool & Wolverine”, with less than half of the entries of the first place on the list: 611 thousand.

In 2024, NOS represented 68.2% of the exhibition market share in Portugal, followed by UCI with 10.7% and Cineplace with 6.7%.

NOS's numbers, in fact, go hand in hand with global figures: the 4% drop in the number of viewers between 2024 and 2023 is accompanied by a 0.7% increase in revenue.

The ICA recalls that, in 2024, 391 feature films were released, 112 from the USA and 202 from Europe, with the former being seen by 72.8% of total viewers and the European ones by 12.9%.
