With an area of 1,217.90 hectares, located in the municipality of Monchique, the OIGP-APM is the result of an application submitted by the Monchique Local Development Association – Corredor Verde (AMCV), in partnership with the Monchique City Council, with the support technician at the company Geo21 – Territorial Development Consultants.

The execution of the operation will be managed and operationalised by AMCV, “based on transparent procedures, involving and mobilizing local owners and actors”.

“The project foresees a maximum investment amount of 2,455,480.90 euros, measures that will be 100% financed, guaranteeing the necessary resources to achieve the defined objectives. This investment will be complemented by a maximum annual support of 137,879.67 euros over 20 years, to help maintain the investments”, added the municipality.

This operation “arises as a response to an urgent need to mitigate the risks associated with forest fires that have devastated the mountains and municipality of Monchique in recent years. The project foresees the creation of fuel management strips in the areas surrounding the road network and population clusters, contributing to greater resilience of the territory in the face of future extreme events».

This project “is part of a very important component of promoting socioeconomic development, stimulating the creation of economic opportunities associated with nature tourism, agriculture oriented towards endogenous products and forestry activities, encouraging balanced and sustainable growth in this territory”.

“The importance of enhancing local ecosystems, through the recovery of watercourses and adjacent habitats, reinforcing biodiversity and promoting environmental conservation practices,” concludes the Chamber, is also not forgotten.
