According to preliminary data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), last year there were increases of 2.4% in overnight stays by residents and 4.8% in those by non-residents.

In total, 6.7 billion euros of total revenue (resulting from all hotel establishment activity) and 5.1 billion euros of room revenue (relating only to overnight stays) will have been generated, an increase of 10.9% compared to 2023 in both.

The INE reports a slowdown in the growth rate of revenue, both total and from pensions, compared to 2023, a year in which these indicators recorded year-on-year increases of 20.0% and 21.4%, respectively.

In 2024 as a whole, revenues increased in all regions, with emphasis on the Azores (+20.2% in total revenues and +22.0% in revenues from accommodation) and Madeira (+15.3% and +16.3%, in the same order).

Revenue

The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) increased by 7.0% and reached 69.3 euros, with the highest values ​​recorded in Greater Lisbon (106.7 euros) and Madeira (83.1 euros).

The average revenue per occupied room (ADR) rose 6.5% to 120.3 euros and reached higher values ​​in Greater Lisbon (150.4 euros) and the Algarve (126.9 euros).

The greatest growth was recorded in the autonomous regions of Madeira (+13.3% in both indicators) and the Azores (+13.3% in RevPAR and +10.7% in ADR).

Overnight stays

In 2024, the 10 municipalities with the highest number of overnight stays accounted for 60.0% of the total number of overnight stays, 35.0% of resident overnight stays and 70.6% of non-resident overnight stays.

The municipality of Lisbon accounted for 19.6% of the total number of overnight stays, reaching 15.7 million (+3.6%), with overnight stays by residents decreasing by 0.8% and those by non-residents increasing by 4.4%. This municipality accounted for 23.9% of all overnight stays by non-residents in 2024 (24.0% in 2023).

Albufeira remained the second municipality with the highest number of overnight stays (7.7 million overnight stays, a weight of 9.6%), despite having registered a decrease of 0.7% and remaining below pre-pandemic values ​​(-9.5% compared to 2019).

This was followed by Funchal (6.3 million overnight stays, a weight of 7.8%), which recorded growth of 2.4% due to the contribution of non-residents (+4.1%), given that residents fell by 7.3%.

In Porto, overnight stays also totaled 6.3 million (7.8% weight), and growth of 6.9% was observed.
