Paul is the creator of Hawk-Eye Innovations technology which has revolutionised cricket, tennis and football internationally, and Josh is sitting his A levels this year.
The father and son duo with the team name “Scholarship” are from the United Kingdom but Paul has been an Algarve resident since 2019. The idea behind the name is that Paul would like his kids “to learn the same life lessons through sport as I learnt. One of the greatest life lessons is resilience, as everyone’s journey through life has their ups and downs. How one responds to the challenges is fundamental to achieving a positive outcome.”
The World’s Toughest Row is a total of 4800km and within the race, boats are partaking with 5, 4,3,2 and 1 rowers. According to Heather, Paul’s partner, “The current leader is a foursome monikered Row 4 Cancer, but Paul and Josh in Scholarship are currently leading the pack in pairs, and have been consistently upfront in pairs throughout, which is a herculean effort. Along the way, Paul and Josh have encountered storms, tuna, dolphins, barnacles, blisters, and far too much freeze-dried food. Weather conditions have been tough this year and they and many boats have had to deploy their parachute anchor to stop them from being pushed hard-earned miles backwards. They row 2 hours on, 2 hours off, and sleep when they aren’t rowing. They are set to arrive in Antigua on the 27 January.”
They are raising money for Twinning Project, which helps break the poverty/crime cycle by providing short-sentence criminals in UK prisons with a sporting outlet by way of training and mentors to give focus, community and role models within sports clubs when they leave. This aims to reduce the shocking number of people trapped in a cycle of reoffending.
